 2017 Preview

B.T. Washington completed the 2016 season with a 7-4 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region two, the Golden Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. B.T. Washington's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Vigor by a score of 47-0.

The Golden Eagles improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2004. No team at B.T. Washington ever won more games in a season than the seven victories last year. The 357 points scored by the Golden Eagles last year were a team record in a single season. The Golden Eagles qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the school's history in 2016. The Golden Eagles have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. The Golden Eagles hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Heard saw improvement as they won seven games following a 2-7 record in 2015.

Since 2010, the B.T. Washington football program has struggled with a record of 20-49.

Over the past 25 seasons, B.T. Washington has not won much with a record of 65-186. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 5A and 362nd in the AHSAA. The Golden Eagles have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time.

The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Maurice Heard who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 17-42 over the past six seasons at B.T. Washington. Under his direction the Golden Eagles have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Heard.

Coach Heard's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 17-42 (28.8%).

A 7-4 record last year was the best in the schools history. It was also the first time the Golden Eagles qualified for the playoffs.

The B.T. Washington Golden Eagles will play in Class 5A region two during the 2017 season.

The Golden Eagles will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season.

Senior Dyrese Hubbard returns after rushing for 1,355 yards on 166 carries and scoring 11 touchdowns. Senior Brian Mose also returns after rushing for 567 yards on 60 carries and scoring 4 TDs.

Also returning is Senior cornerback Tyson Armstead who collected 3 interceptions last year.

The Golden Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Marbury on Friday, August 25 at Eagles Stadium. Last year the Marbury Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 5A region three. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Catholic Montgomery by a score of 60-33.
